The Application Process

Many organisations, particularly in the public sector, use application forms. It's important you read instructions carefully, however trivial they may seem, and follow them all. If you don't there will always be more people out there who do. And it's them, not you, who will be given preference.

The hardest space to complete is the Additional Information page. Use this part to show how suitable you are for the post. Link all essential criteria from the job description to your skills, knowledge and experience. Then do the same with desirable criteria. This helps the employer to see how well you match their requirements.

Make sure you include all relevant information on your application form. Employers can't guess - you have to show that you are the ideal person for them. If you have the opportunity, ring and speak to someone for further information. If you're polite and ask pertinent questions, you'll be remembered for the right reasons. Don't be pushy, or you'll be remembered for the wrong reasons!

You must return your application form in good time before the closing date. The employer might wait, but if 20 people who meet all the criteria have got their application in on time, they might not.

Don't lie. Under any circumstances. You'll be caught out and normally face instant dismissal. It’s just not worth it.
