Schools

North Yorkshire Children and Young People's Service supports 389 schools across the county as well as four Outdoor Education centres, Adult Learning and two Pupil Referral Units (which provide education to pupils at risk of exclusion or who are permanently excluded from school).

Three and Four Year Old settings

the County Council has three nursery schools, 59 nursery classes attached to primary schools and works with over 300 private and voluntary providers to ensure high quality early education places all over North Yorkshire.

Primary schools

North Yorkshire has 327 primary schools. There is a mix of infant, junior and all-through primary schools (3-11 or 4-11 years).

Secondary schools

There are 47 secondary schools (of which 24 offer sixth form education). Most of these are comprehensive although there are two areas of selective grammar school education in Ripon and Skipton. Transfer to secondary education is at 11, apart from the North Craven area where transfer to middle school is at 10. In addition there are two Pupil Referral Units, based at Harrogate and Scarborough.

Special schools

There are 11 special schools, one of which is at Sedbergh in Cumbria. Four mainstream schools also have extra resources to allow them to make provision for certain types of special educational needs.

Outdoor Education

The Outdoor Education Service runs residential centres at Pateley Bridge, Humphrey Head, East Barnby and Great Fryupdale on the east coast.

Please note

You can apply at any time for a change of school due to special circumstances (e.g. change of address or other reason for leaving the present school). This is commonly known as a mid year or casual admission.
